Explorers · ages 6–8 · Grades 1–3

How do machines think?

Explorers is where six-to-eight-year-olds discover that machines follow rules, that computers can learn from examples, and that they can make a machine do what they imagine. Half of every session is away from screens.

Explorers

What your child will learn

  • To give precise instructions and fix them when they go wrong, which is the heart of coding.
  • To build animated stories and simple games in ScratchJr, using events, loops and messages.
  • How machines sense the world, and how a computer can be taught to recognise things from examples.
  • That machines make mistakes, why bad examples cause them, and what fair and unfair mean for a machine.
  • To explain and present what they made: two confident sentences in front of an audience.

What they will make

  • A floor-robot treasure map with a program written on paper and tested on the floor.
  • A three-page animated ScratchJr story with their own voice recordings.
  • An interactive scene where characters react to taps and to each other.
  • Level 2, a game with a character that reacts. Level 3, an invention that helps at home, pitched in one minute.

How it runs

  • 60-minute sessions, once a week, in a 10-week term. One level per term, three levels in the band.
  • Groups of 6–8 with two adults. Roughly half of each session is unplugged: robots, cards, role-play.
  • No reading required to take part. Every activity is icon-based or spoken.
  • Ends with the Robot Parade: parents come, children present, and every child earns the term badge.

Who it is for: No prior experience needed. Emerging readers are fine. A child who already uses ScratchJr confidently can enter at Level 2 after a 20-minute placement session.

Levels are terms

The three levels

One level is one 10-week term. Children move up by readiness, not just by birthday.

  1. Level 1

    Robot Rules

Instructions, sequencing and first ScratchJr stories. Machines follow rules and learn from examples.

They make: A floor-robot treasure map and a three-page animated story, presented at the Robot Parade.

  2. Level 2

    Pattern Detectives

Patterns, loops and conditions. How a computer learns from patterns. A game with a character that reacts.

They make: A ScratchJr game with reacting characters, plus a class-designed teach-the-computer demo.

  3. Level 3

    Little Inventors

Design thinking, lightly: a problem at home, a helper built with ScratchJr or a floor robot, and AI helpers around us.

They make: An invention with a real input, a poster and a one-minute pitch.

Safe by design

Safety and AI use

  • Children never log into any AI tool. The instructor drives AI demonstrations on the big screen.
  • No photos of children are ever used to train anything. Models are trained on toys, gestures and sounds.
  • Two vetted adults in every room, and written parental consent for photos and videos.

What comes home

  • 01

A 60-second clip of your child showing their work, every week, plus one dinner-table question.

  • 02

A skills map with the stickers they earned and the AI Passport stamps they collected.

  • 03

The term badge and a link to their portfolio.

Every term

Ends with the Robot Parade

Parents come, children premiere their stories and run their treasure maps live, and every child earns the term badge.
